At Carleton University, the department of Psychology offers a Practicum Program which provides students with the opportunity to combine their academic studies with experience in an applied environment. As part of our continued effort to further education in Psychology, we have recently established ourselves as one of the Practicum sites at Carleton University.
While at Gilmour Psychological Services (GPS), students will be accompanied by the Director of the Practicum Program, the Office Manager, or a member of the Administrative Staff. From networking opportunities to the acquisition of useful skills in the mental health field, this placement aims to give students many opportunities to grow and learn.
→ Insight into the daily operations and administrative tasks of a large group private practice of PhD level, full-time psychologists; understanding the management of private, sensitive and confidential information; advanced skills in digital media, branding, and web content.
→ Management of time/project deadlines; proficiency in organizing and drafting sections of business operations manuals.
→ Drafting some sections of Psychological Assessment reports; obtain qualitative skills (e.g., behavioural observation skills, clinical file management), and quantitative skills (e.g., understanding certain statistics, observing formal testing processes)
The University of Ottawa doctoral program in Clinical Psychology includes a Practicum placement as a requirement for all its students. The intention of the placement is for prospective doctors to participate in applied training to acquire the clinical and professional competencies in the form of knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to become an autonomous psychologist.
Since 2020, Gilmour Psychological Services offers the opportunity for students to train with some of their psychologists while completing their Ph.D.. We aim to provide students with experience in working with a range of populations and presenting problems.
Our philosophy revolves around providing the highest quality service and supervision to clients and students. A developmental model will be used, whereby students are provided with a degree of support that matches their level of comfort and training, gradually tapering off to encourage more autonomous practice. Regular supervision and bi-directional feedback are adjusted as necessary.
Our goal in providing this training opportunity is to contribute to the next generation of psychologists, providing high quality learning opportunities and teaching students about clinical practice in the context of private practice.
Goals:
1. Reinforce and practice evidence-based clinical assessment, conceptualization and report-writing.
2. Expand knowledge and practice of assessment tools, assessment models and approaches, effort and validity testing, and differential diagnosis.
3. Begin building a working knowledge of how to ethically and efficiently provide services within private practice, including issues related to confidentiality, security of records, working with contracted psychometrists, etc.
4. Strengthen sense of professionalism, professional identity, personal process, and self-care.
Supervision will be provided in a variety of ways, including individual and group supervision, observation, communication with contracted psychometrists who worked with the students, and review of written work. Students will complete a detailed written training plan at the beginning of their placement and receive regular feedback on their performance.
Our Psychologist in Supervised Practice have completed all of their clinical training, as well as their clinical internship, and their doctoral degree. At this stage, they enter supervised practice and work under the supervision of two more senior colleagues until they are formally registered as an “autonomous” psychologist with the CPBAO. This process usually takes twelve to eighteen months. These Psychologists are highly trained, and use both their own expertise as well as that of their supervisors in order to help their clients.
The director’s assistant plays a role in reporting to and supporting the directors at GPS to provide efficient functioning at the practice by assisting with a variety of tasks. In this position, a director’s assistant helps in managing day-to-day operations, engages in special projects, and works alongside GPS’ directors and office manager. Some special projects that have been worked on to date are systemizing and documenting essential office procedures to improve the administrative practice manual, purchasing and helping in setting up the new office, organizing events, graphic designs (i.e., directory board, event posters), and directing the volunteer and undergraduate practicum program. The director’s assistant works on a contract basis, and is not a full-time position. In addition to working as a director’s assistant
All the psychologists at GPS are independent associates. All our psychologists have doctoral degrees, are registered with the
College of Psychologists and Behavioural Analysts of Ontario, and provide evidence-based psychological services. With clinical expertise, up-to-date knowledge, and years of experience, they offer compassionate support through psychotherapy, counseling, psychological testing, and consultation, tailored to each client's needs. Services are available in both English and French. We currently have 22 full-time Ph.D. psychologists working at Gilmour Psychological Services. We are always interested in meeting new potential associates; if you are interested in joining GPS, please send your CV to info@ottawa-psychologists.com.
A Psychology Intern is enrolled in an academic program and typically performs clinical work under the supervision of a licensed Psychologist. The exact specifications of each psychology internship vary. It is the last clinical practicum before supervised practice and typically lasts one year.
GPS has just recently accepted one intern from the University of Ottawa under the supervision of
Dr. Deanna Drahovzal. Although GPS is not an accredited internship site at this time, it is a goal that the practice has for the future.
At GPS, we have been fortunate enough to work with several students on a volunteer basis as they completed their university degree. Over the past couple of years, Gilmour has opened its doors to individuals seeking experience in a clinical office setting. By volunteering, individuals are exposed to many different parts of running a large private group practice.
Our Practicum Training Program is designed with training goals in line with CPO areas of competency.
Reinforce and practice evidence-based clinical assessment, conceptualization, report-writing, intervention, and progress monitoring.
Expand knowledge of sexual health/function, couple/relationship issues, and LGBTQ+ issues, and how to integrate this knowledge into clinical practice (for
Dr. Dargie’s placement).
Expand knowledge and practice of assessment tools, assessment models and approaches, effort and validity testing, and differential diagnosis (for Dr. Drahovzal’s placement).
Expand knowledge of the impacts of cultural context on our assessments, case conceptualization and interventions with clients.
Build working knowledge of how to maintain ethical and efficient services within private practice, including issues related to confidentiality, security of records, setting appropriate boundaries, working with contracted psychometrists, etc.
Strengthen sense of professionalism, professional identity, personal process, and self-care.
