Play therapy is a therapeutic approach typically used when working with children ages 3 to 12. It was developed as a means for helping children process difficult emotions, allowing them to develop a strong sense of self. Play therapy helps children to identify and build upon strengths, increase self-esteem, foster creative and appropriate modes of emotional expression, and develop healthy attachments. During a session, the therapist observes the child’s behaviour, encouraging the child to express themselves freely through play.
Play therapy is often beneficial for helping children experiencing social or emotional deficits improve their communication skills, address challenging behaviours, and foster healthy ways of relating to others. Children who have experienced or witnessed stressful events such as abuse, serious illness, or domestic violence may benefit from play therapy.
Parents and caregivers may expect an initial intake interview where the therapist collects information, followed by an interview with the child. The therapist will then make an assessment which will determine the course of treatment for the child’s unique needs. The child may be encouraged to play with certain toys or engage in certain games that help facilitate self-expression and learning of positive behaviours.
