Dr. Coupland provides psychological services (assessment and psychotherapy) to adolescents, adults, couples and families. She opened her practice in 1993. She also was on staff at the Royal Ottawa Hospital for over 12 years and has been a Clinical Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Ottawa. She has extensive experience in research and teaching and training of students and other professionals.

In her practice, Dr. Coupland works with a diversity of clinical issues. She treats adults who need help with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, anger management, sexual and interpersonal difficulties, and adjustment issues related to life changes. She has a special interest in working with couples where one or both partners may be struggling with issues of this nature.

Dr. Coupland also works with adolescents and young adults who have problems with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, identity disturbance, behavioural and adjustment difficulties.

For many years, Dr. Coupland provided leadership in a Family Therapy Clinic in a hospital-based children’s outpatient program. She is now offering a Family Consultation Service as part of her clinical practice. The Family Consultation Service provides assessment and short-term therapy for families who may need help with the following: adjusting to the developmental stages of adolescence and young adulthood; crisis situations that involve early intervention; life transitions, such as divorce and remarriage; child and adolescent behavioural problems; and various psychiatric conditions.

Dr. Coupland has training and extensive experience in the use of several therapeutic models and practices such as cognitive behaviour, systems, self psychology and interpersonal therapy approaches. She believes this is necessary in order to be clinically effective with a diversity of psychosocial problems. Dr. Coupland incorporates evidenced-based therapeutic approaches into her work.

Dr. Coupland received her Master's and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa. She is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, and is a member of the Canadian Psychological Association. To ensure her continued competence as a psychologist, she participates in a professional study group and attends workshops and conferences on an ongoing basis.
