Dr. Doreen Gough conducts psychotherapy with adult individuals and groups. She works with a diversity of adult problems. These include, but are not limited to: depression, , anxiety, suicidal feelings, avoidance and fears of intimacy, personality disorders, post traumatic stress, problems around self-esteem, anxiety, suicidal feelings, avoidance and fear of intimacy, personality disorders, post traumatic stress, sexual dysfunction, substance abuse problems, grief, infertility, crisis, and burn-out,emotional reactions to medical problems and survival of sexual abuse, accidents, criminal attack or war..
Adjustment issues are of particular interest to Dr. Gough, including adjustment to recent changes and achievement of a balance among competing demands. such as moving, career change, birth of a child, loss of a loved one, medical condition, conflicts at work, relational problems, blending families, immigration, and also achieving a balance among competing demands on one’s time and energy, e.g. work, children, spouse and self needs. Dr. Gough’s psychotherapeutic orientation can be described as an integrated approach, utilizing thoughts, feelings, emotions, memories and sometimes dreams to address and resolve distressing symptoms and behaviours in a supportive and accepting environment. As well, this method analyzes and, in collaboration with the individual, attempts to mend the part of the underlying personality that causeds these symptoms and behaviours. and is amenable to change. Change comes about through analysis of the underlying personality structure together with resolution of current problems or issues in the individual’s life. The group therapy offered by Dr. Gough is an effective and economical way to provide clients with therapeutic opportunities to develop relationships and test new skills for interaction. Members work together to establish an atmosphere of belonging and acceptance, develop understanding and insight, provide feedback, test reality and identify and learn from each other.s to the underlying personality structure together with resolution of current problems or issues in the individual’s life, lead to change. Dr. Gough received both a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) and an Honours Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) from Carleton University. She earned her doctorate in professional psychology from the University of Ottawa. She completed her pre-doctoral internships at the Centre for Psychological Services and at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. Prior to her doctoral training, Dr. Gough was employed for eight years in a scientific and managerial ement capacity in the federal government and has first hand knowledge of the mental and physical effects of job burnout and job dissatisfaction.. Dr. Gough is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, and is a member of the Ontario Psychological Association, the Canadian Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, the Ottawa Academy of Psychologogy.y, the Ottawa Self-Psychology Case Study Group and guest member of the Ottawa Psychoanalytic Society. Dr. Gough’s voluntary activities have included foster parenting, working with new immigrants to help them adjust, and she is past chair of the Ottawa Chapter of the Infertility Awareness Association of Canada.
